Costa Rica, an experience of a lifetime for our Bruins
St. Bede ‘s Foreign Language Department is working hard to help transform the way our students view the world. Along with Brittany Botero and Lindsey Olivero- Gong, the language department feels like a force that will captivate our Bruins for many years to come. We decided it was finally time to provide an opportunity for students to experience the culture they’ve been learning about outside the traditional brick and mortar classroom environment.
This April, a group of 15 students and I took an 8 day Immersion Tour through Costa Rica; we visited major cities like Liberia, San Jose, Sarapiqui and Arenal.
The purpose was to help students practice their language skills by listening to locals and getting a chance to converse with them. Students were able to do adventurous things like kayaking and zip lining, but they also got a chance to learn about the Central American culture. We attended dance classes, cooking courses and spent plenty of time with local families and kids. We visited schools, picked pineapples straight from the field, milked cows and even got up close and personal with a volcano.
What impressed me the most was how happy the kids were as they made new friends and how excited they were to share the experience upon their return. International tours are great incentives for our students but also to add another piece to the puzzle as we work hard to form globalized citizens. This trip was definitely a highlight for our students and can’t wait for our upcoming trip to Peru, Land of the Inca in 2018 where we’ll be visiting Cuzco, Lima, Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley.
